Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie from around eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai started the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final green.
Playoff Climax
This led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under closing round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
