A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the new year.

The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets throughout Japan and internationally.

"An inaugural tuna signals good luck," stated the company president, a notable participant at the annual new year's auction.

Referred to as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is noted for submitting record bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the successful bidder told journalists that he was "taken aback at the amount," adding, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price soared before you knew it."

This most recent acquisition surpasses his previous record purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously associated with sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which stated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.

The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants soon after the auction concluded.

"I feel like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so lucky as the year gets underway," said one happy patron.
